The BA offers books, leaflets and postcards which members would find impossible or difficult to buy through the normal sources, and itself produces videos, leaflets, lists, and books of interest. These are only available to members.

It is the Association's policy not to handle the sale of members' work. To purchase these items, or request repair work, contact the Hon Secretary for names of members who run a business or accept commissions.

Rodney Cousins lists basketmakers' and willow growers' names, birthdays and birth places from C19 censi and trade directories, and has described in detail and with photos the lives of a number of them. An apprenticeship agreement is reproduced. There are articles on 'Rod peeling v school', working regulations of 1st Jan 1919, basket names and a willow timeline. An Introduction to the Art of Basketmaking £7.00

by Thomas Okey. This is a classic. Published in 1911, until around WWII it was almost the only instruction book available. The style is old fashioned but it is still relevant for its promotion of pride in craftsmanship, and it illustrates the work ethic of those times. 'The Art of....' - the title says it all! This is the second reprint produced by the BA. There are still a fair number in stock, but they are diminishing!

Yarmouth Herring Cran £13.80

demonstrated by Colin Manthorpe. The Quarter Cran basket, holding about 25kg, was the official measure for herring. It is complex and made of willow, palembang cane for fitching, and kubu cane for handles. Each basket was subject to checking by the Government Inspector. When passed as accurate, a brand was burnt onto the wooden slats. Their making was the achievement aimed at by basketmakers at the end of their 5years' apprenticeship. On this video, Colin Manthorpe makes a willow cran before a BA audience.
